Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between percent and percentage points?

Percent refers to a ratio out of 100, while percentage points measure the absolute difference between two percentages. For example, if a rate goes from 10% to 15%, it increased by 5 percentage points but increased by 50% in relative terms.

Is 50% off then 20% off the same as 70% off?

No. Stacked discounts don’t add up simply. A $100 item with 50% off becomes $50, then 20% off that makes $40. The actual discount is 60%. Formula: 1 – (1-0.5) x (1-0.2) = 0.6 = 60%

How are increase and decrease rates different?

Increase rates are shown as positive (+), decrease rates as negative (-). Going from 100 to 120 is +20% increase; from 100 to 80 is -20% decrease. This calculator automatically identifies increase/decrease and distinguishes them with colors and icons.

How are decimal places handled?

Results are displayed to two decimal places. Price calculations are rounded to whole numbers. Copy the result if you need the exact value for further calculations.
