Input tips
  • Feet / inches input is often the most natural choice for U.S. forms, profiles, and fitness logs.
  • Centimeter input is useful when you are reading international records, medical forms, or size charts.
  • The result groups both unit systems together, so you can read the everyday number first and still copy the metric equivalent when needed.
  • Weight ranges are adult BMI reference values. For children and teens, use age-specific growth charts instead.

Range caution

For children, teens, athletes with very high muscle mass, or anyone who is pregnant, do not rely on BMI-based weight references alone. Use a clinician’s guidance or age-appropriate charts instead.

What is the Height Calculator?

The Height Calculator converts height between centimeters (cm) and feet/inches (ft/in). In the U.S., feet and inches are the familiar everyday format, while centimeters are often needed for international forms, records, and sizing charts. This tool keeps both systems side by side so you can move between them without opening another converter.

To make the page more useful than a simple unit conversion, it also shows meters (m), total inches (in), the BMI 22 target weight, the 18.5–22.9 reference range, and the WHO healthy range. That gives you one place to check both the unit conversion and a quick health reference tied to height.

When it helps

This tool is especially helpful when you move between U.S. and international unit systems. For example, a U.S. profile may ask for feet and inches, while an overseas form or medical record may use centimeters. It is also handy when you want a rough BMI-based weight reference right after converting height.

  • When a form asks for height in ft/in and you only know the metric value
  • When you want to convert a profile or sports listing into centimeters
  • When you need a quick height-based weight reference after reading a record
  • When you compare size charts that mix cm and ft/in
  • When you want to clean up a height value before opening a BMI or goal-weight tool

Key features

The result layout is designed so one height value can be read in several useful ways. The top card highlights the everyday U.S. format first, while the supporting cards and table break out the metric equivalent, total inches, and weight references in a format that is easy to scan or copy.

  • Live ft/in ↔ cm conversion – Shows the equivalent value as soon as you type.
  • Meters and total inches shown together – Includes values often used in formulas, medical records, and international lists.
  • BMI-based reference weights – Shows the BMI 22 target and both reference ranges on the same screen.
  • Quick example buttons – Tap a familiar height to preview the full result layout instantly.
  • Visual scale – See where the entered height sits on a ruler-style scale.
  • Runs in your browser – Input values stay local and are not sent to a server.

How to use it

Choose the input format that matches the number you already have. Use feet/inches for the U.S. everyday format, or centimeters when a record or international form uses metric units. The result updates automatically, so you can compare a few values quickly.

  1. Select an input format – Pick feet/inches or centimeters.
  2. Enter the height – Use the separate feet and inches fields or the single centimeter field.
  3. Check the conversion – Review the ft/in, cm, m, and total-inch values in the result area.
  4. Read the BMI reference – Use the BMI 22 target and healthy ranges as a quick adult reference.
  5. Open related tools – If you already know your weight, continue to the BMI or Ideal Weight Calculator.

Detailed explanation

Length conversion uses a fixed standard. One inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters, and one foot equals 12 inches. So converting centimeters to inches uses cm ÷ 2.54, while converting feet and inches to centimeters uses (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54. This tool applies those formulas and shows rounded decimals for readability.

The weight reference ranges use the BMI formula. BMI is calculated as weight (kg) ÷ height (m)², so if you know a target BMI, you can solve for weight with BMI × height (m)². This page shows the BMI 22 target weight, the 18.5–22.9 reference range, and the WHO healthy range (18.5–24.9) so you can interpret the number more easily.

  • Centimeters → inches: cm ÷ 2.54
  • Inches → centimeters: in × 2.54
  • Feet / inches → centimeters: (ft × 12 + in) × 2.54
  • BMI 22 target weight: 22 × height(m)²
  • Reference range (18.5–22.9): 18.5 × height(m)² ~ 22.9 × height(m)²
  • WHO healthy range: 18.5 × height(m)² ~ 24.9 × height(m)²

Frequently asked questions

Why must inches stay under 12 in feet/inches input?

Because 1 foot already equals 12 inches. For example, 5 ft 12 in is the same as 6 ft 0 in, so keeping inches between 0 and 11 is the clearest and most stable way to enter the value.

Can the cm and ft/in results look slightly different because of decimals?

Yes. The calculator may use more precision internally, but the screen rounds values for readability. That can make a 0.1 in difference appear, even though the conversion standard itself stays the same.

Why show weight ranges too?

Because many people go straight from height conversion to a BMI or goal-weight check. Showing the reference ranges on the same page makes the result useful for both profile entry and quick health planning.

Can children and teens use the same weight reference?

No. Children and teens should use age-specific growth charts, percentiles, or clinical guidance instead of adult BMI reference ranges.

Is my height saved?

No. All calculations happen in your browser only, and the height you enter is not stored on the server. Refreshing the page or pressing Reset clears the values.

Why show total inches in addition to ft/in?

Some equipment sizes, formulas, and conversion workflows use total inches directly. Showing both the readable ft/in format and the total-inch number lets you use whichever one fits the task.
