What is PDF Page Number Adder?

PDF Page Number Adder is an online tool that adds page numbers to your document so you can organize handouts, reports, and submission files without installing extra software. You can preview the uploaded PDF in your browser and save a newly numbered copy right away.

It is especially useful when a PDF has no numbering yet or when only a selected range should be renumbered. If you also want to place text watermarks, you can pair it with the PDF Watermark Generator.

Useful Scenarios

Page numbers help people navigate, review, print, and annotate documents faster. This tool works well when you need to add numbering to an existing PDF or restart numbering for only part of a document.

  • Add page numbers to lecture notes or seminar handouts
  • Prepare printed review copies of proposals and reports
  • Renumber pages after combining multiple PDFs
  • Restart numbering for a short excerpt or appendix
  • Make references and comments easier before final distribution

Key Features

You can adjust the number format, start number, placement, color, size, and target range from one screen. The preview and target-page table make it easier to double-check the result before downloading.

  • Five numbering styles including number-only, current / last number, and Page formats
  • Custom start number for continued numbering
  • Top / bottom presets plus fine X/Y positioning
  • Apply to all pages or a custom range such as 1-3,5,8-10
  • Preview-page switching and target table review
  • Browser-only local processing and instant PDF download

How to Use

Upload a PDF, choose the numbering style and position, confirm the target range, and then download the new file. In custom mode, the numbering starts from your chosen start number and follows the order of the selected pages.

  1. Upload PDF: Click the upload area or drag and drop your file.
  2. Choose the format: Select number-only, current / last number, or a Page label format.
  3. Adjust the style: Set the start number, font, size, color, and opacity.
  4. Place the number: Use top / bottom presets or fine-tune with the X/Y sliders.
  5. Confirm the target range: Apply to all pages or enter a custom range such as 1-3,5.
  6. Preview and download: Review the target list and save the new numbered PDF.

Tips for PDF Page Number Placement

For most reports and study materials, bottom-center placement with a 16-22pt dark gray or black number is the safest starting point. If the number overlaps the content or gets too close to the print margin, nudge it with the X/Y sliders.

Recommended Starting Values

  • Format 1 / N: Quickly shows the reader where they are in a multi-page sequence
  • Font size 16-22pt: A readable default range for A4 documents and handouts
  • Opacity 80-95%: Keeps the number visible without dominating the page
  • Bottom center: Familiar placement with minimal interference in the body area

Custom Range and Final Number

Enter ranges like 1-3,5,8-10. Page numbers always start from 1 in the document itself, while the N in 1 / N means the last number in the numbering sequence. For example, if you target 3 pages and start from 10, the result becomes 10 / 12, 11 / 12, and 12 / 12.

Font Compatibility Note

The tool relies on built-in PDF fonts, so numeric and English label formats are the most reliable. If you need fully custom non-Latin labels, a later version with custom font upload would be the better approach.

FAQ

Are uploaded PDFs stored on your server?

No. PDF files are processed only in your browser and are never uploaded or stored on a server.

Can I number only part of the document?

Yes. In custom mode, enter a range such as 1-3,5 to apply numbering only to those pages.

Can I restart numbering from a custom number?

Yes. Enter any start number you want, and the first target page will begin from that value. For example, a start number of 10 produces 10, 11, 12, and so on.

What does the last number in the current / last-number format mean?

It represents the last number in the numbering sequence. If you start from 10 and target two pages, the output becomes 10 / 11 and 11 / 11.

Can password-protected PDFs be processed?

Some encrypted PDFs cannot be handled because of browser limitations. If that happens, try again with an unlocked copy.
